Canon 7D

Since we can’t seem to keep the 5D in the office, we decided to get yet another camera. We now have a 7D as well as the 5D. The new camera brings lots of new accessories including two new lenses, a follow focus and a tripod. We are quite excited about this purchase as it beefs up our gear selection. Hopefully, now we’ll be able to accommodate everybody’s camera needs!

AICP Show

Last night, we managed to get the majority of the Trio Films staff over to the AICP show at the LA County Museum of Art. The food was great, the weather was lovely (thanks to many strategically placed heaters), and many conversations were had. If anyone else made it out there, we hope you had a wonderful evening! The Dream is Real....

On Monday we had a discussion about Christopher Nolan’s Inception during lunch. Almost everyone in the office saw it this past weekend and we all agreed that it was quite impressive. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you do. I won’t give away specifics, but I will say that it was beautifully shot, well acted, and extremely creative. I can’t even imagine the time and effort it took to sort out such a complex story. I guess with a budget of $200 million (estimated) you have the resources to make a stunning film. I enjoy and appreciate that Nolan doesn’t rely on language, nudity and sex to draw in an audience. The plot and performances are more than enough to engage an audience for nearly two-and-a-half hours. It was shot in both 35mm and 70mm (65mm).

In The Dark Knight, Nolan used both of these formats as well. If you saw The Dark Knight in IMAX you’ll remember how the aspect ratio changed when going from scenes shot in IMAX to regular 35mm scenes. Basically, it went from wide screen to full screen. During Inception I didn’t catch any changes in aspect ratio. I’m assuming this means that the final film was completely printed to 35mm. Maybe too many people complained about the aspect ratio jump in The Dark Knight? Maybe going back and forth between the two formats was complicated and expensive? The sound and the visuals in Inception were still incredible, even without the full frame effect. Also, hats off to Hans Zimmer for composing a fantastic, complementing score. Okay, enough with the nerd rant. All in all, it was an amazing film and I will definitely have to see it again in theatres. Go see it in IMAX at least once; it’s totally worth it.

Ad in Boards Magazine

Back in May, Trio Films finally got around to placing an ad in Boards magazine. Seems that we did it just in the nick of time, because that would be their final issue. We like to think of it as an achievement of sorts. If you still have your commemorative May 2010 Boards magazine and are willing to remove it from its protective plastic cover, turn to page 24 to take a peek. Ramaa Mosley's MilkBone Campaign

Ramaa Mosley just returned from shooting a MilkBone campaign for Draftfcb (San Francisco) featuring disabled people and their astounding canine assistants.The four camera shoot took place in Georgia at the Canine Assistants Organization's farm, where every year over 100 dogs are bred and trained to become companions and assist people with extreme disabilities.
The agency, Ramaa, and DP Danny Moder decided to take a documentary approach to the campaign and shot on multiple Canon 5D cameras at 24fps, allowing the small crew to move fast and capture real moments as they unfolded. One spot featured Chris, a trainer at CAO, teaching an especially talented 9 month old dog named Nobel over 90 skills including opening doors, turning off lights, and picking up dropped objects.
Another spot featured Zoe, a young girl with Down syndrome, and her dog Carmel. Carmel has helped Zoe open up and become more social and lively. A third spot followed Jack who has Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. The spot shows how his dog Amber has made a profound impact on Jack's life as she helps him by breaking down barriers both physically and emotionally.
